Tips for Keyboard Users and Screen Readers

The following is a list of tips and keyboard commands you can use to navigate Webmail.

Move around the application with a screen reader using

  1. Landmarks
  2. Lists of headings, links, buttons or form controls
  3. Tab keys
  4. Arrow keys
  5. Any of your other familiar navigation strategies

The big difference between this application and some other applications on the web is that for list boxes, the up/down arrow keys move through options, and for radio groups, the right and left arrows get to a radio button. The tables below that describe how to navigate and use different parts of the applicaton. Move to these tables in JAWS or NVDA, using the "T" key to quickly go to these table and your table keys Control+Alt+Arrows to move around each table. Sections of the Application Window. The screen is divided into 4 sections described in this table.

Section Description
Top Navigation Contains screen reader button that opens this keyboard popup, and a dropdown labelled with your account email. Open it to go to the support centre, take a tour of the features of this application, provide us with feedback, or log out.
Section chooser sidebar (found after Navigation in tab order). It is visually positioned as a vertical menu on the far left of the screen Links to Mail, Calendars, Task Lists, Profile, Briefcase and Settings
Sidebar for whatever application is chosen above. This is a vertical menu visually positioned on the left side of the page, but to the right of the application menu.

This has all the options for the section you choose.

  • At the top of the menu there is a search input and a button to create a New Email, Event, Task, Contact, depending on which section is chosen.
  • Below that there are all the things that can be chosen in each application depending on the section you are in. Mail folders, Datepicker and Calendars, Task Lists, Adress Books, Briefcase folders or groups of preferences
Main window for the selections above This is the main work area, and will be filled up with whatever you are working on. It is where you will read or send Email, review or create Calendar Events, read or create Task Lists, update your Profile, or change Settings

Basic instructions for sending an Email

  • If the Mail page is not yet open or if you are not sure, when the page loads, hit tab 3 times to get to the button that reads "Select a Section Main Page Region, Mail"
  • Hit the "B" key in JAWS and NVDA to go to the next button labelled "Compose a new message button".
  • Focus will be placed on where you type the recipient's email address.
  • After entering the email, tab 6 times to get t the Subject line, then tab twice to get to the "Rich Text Editor" section.
  • Type your email
  • Press tab to send button and click enter to send.

If you want to attach a document, tab twice after writing the email to go to the attach button. It uses a regular browse window to go to the file. Once its attached you will be returned to the attach button. Press ShifT+Tab to go back to the "Send" Button.

Editing and formatting an email

Moving around an email as you are creating it works much the same as in any desktop text editor. Try the commands you are used to, many will work such as Home, Shift+LeftArrow etc. A detailed list of instructions is available on the CK Editor website. Below are a few highlights.
